Tour Details

The ascent to the Huayruro Punco Nort (5500 m / 18,044 ft) is one of the routes within the Regional Conservation Area ACR Ausangate, where we can appreciate a magnificent panorama over the mountains of the Cordillera Vilcanota: The Ausangate snow-capped peak (6384 m / 20,945 ft), the Jatunhuma snow-capped peak (6093 m / 19,990 ft), the Sibinacocha lagoon (4873 m / 15,988 ft) and the Quelccaya glacier (5600 m / 18,373 ft), which is considered the grand extension of the tropical glacier on the planet.

The Nevado Huayruro Punco is the mountain that crowns the division between the Pitumarca and Sibinacocha basins. Its Quechua name translates as the red door, and it is also sometimes called Pacco, which means shaman.

In the Vilcanota Cordillera, it is possible to appreciate, like in no other place, the presence of the aboriginal people with their attire, which they have preserved together with their attitudes of attachment to the soil and tradition. The breeding of extensive herds of llamas, alpacas, sheep, and cattle stands out in the middle of the tours; it is magical to observe, among the rocky areas and high glaciers, the sudden appearance of vicuñas, as well as the haughty condor flying overhead.

We recommend that you do at least a 1-day hike at altitude to acclimatize before doing this trek. If you already have previous experience, it is not necessary.

We offer the following hikes:

  • Hiking 3 Qorichocha Lagoons (full day).
  • Hiking Apu Picol
  • Hiking Apu Mama Simona
  • Hiking Apu Pachatusan
